I couldn't parse this so let me restate what Wayne is saying:

if you have no cygwin installed then "sed s/old/new/" will not work but
"bk sed s/old/new/" will work.  

In a trigger, just "sed s/old/new/" will work because your in BK's world
and that world has sed in the path.

Hopefully one of these explanations makes sense :)
